![]() ![]() After my tour, I really loved JMU but unfortunately a great college out of state comes at a great price! My dad was amazed to see how much the local area had changed and had so many things to do. Harrisonburg did not previously have that much to offer, but as the college grows, business franchises have sprung up all around, including restaurant, hotel, and retail chains. The university has had a major impact on the local area because it has grown so much since the time my father attended there in the 1980’s. The quality of service I received from all employees at JMU was great and left me feeling very impressed with the campus. He was very friendly and gave us lots of information about the hospitality program and internship opportunities, and even went out of his way to find a pamphlet about the program for me to take home. It appeared to be empty, but we ran into one of the professors of sport management and he stopped what he was doing in order to sit down and have a nice conversation with us. They also attempted to follow the healthy eating movement by including a healthy ingredient of the week which they incorporated into daily meals (that week, it was broccoli).Īlthough the official tour was over, my father and I decided to visit the hospitality school to get more information. This was somewhat overwhelming for an indecisive food-lover like myself, but I was very pleased to see that they offered ice cream and a variety of toppings. The food they had was very impressive for a college cafeteria they had so many options and it was all-you-can-eat style. At the conclusion of our tour, my father and I chose to eat in the dining hall. A very impressive part of the tour was the brand-new Student Success Center, which was in its very own building and had great facilities. Some other traditions and campus tales included an underground tunnel that might not be closed off as it is supposed to be, jumping into the fountain at Halloween-time, and the kissing rock. And sure enough, when we were standing outside a dorm, someone yelled “J M U” out of their window at us! It made me feel welcome rather than foreign in that new place. Our guide informed us of a school tradition where students will call out “J M U!” and you respond with “duuuukes” and a corresponding lunging movement. Even on a rainy, sleepy Friday morning, students showed their school spirit. Not only was our guide energetic, but the students were as well. He was very enthusiastic about JMU, as most tour guides are about their school, but his spirit really showed the school in a positive light. He was very friendly and well-informed about everything on campus. My tour guide was a male student in his sophomore year. We even got to go inside an actual dorm room which I liked because many other campus tours I have been on did not allow you to do that. We saw the main area where dorms are located, the quad, the library, the football stadium, the student success center, and the student union, as well as other areas. ![]() Every so often our guide would stop the group, explain the area, and answer any questions we had. They provided parking tags for free parking with a tour. It was a walking tour so the mode of transportation was our feet, although we did have to drive from our hotel to the visitor’s center. Once we went outside, we did introductions throughout the group and then our tour guide showed us around the main areas of campus. It was a rainy day, but they provided complimentary JMU water ponchos which was a nice touch. We started the tour with an information session in the visitor’s center, where we were shown a brief video and then were split into our individual tour groups. I went on the trip with my father and stayed in the Holiday Inn nearby, which was not in the best shape but had a nice complimentary breakfast in the morning. I visited the campus on March 27th, 2015 because I had recently been accepted to the university and wanted to tour it in order to help me make my decision about which college I would attend in the fall. The most recent tour I have taken is a campus tour of James Madison University. ![]()
